Keyboard Klub!
Would you like your child to learn to play the piano in a fun group?
Then Keyboard Klub is for you!
My name is Lauri Lyster and I've created a keyboard/piano class for children that I teach from my home here in Alpine Meadows, in Whistler, BC, Canada. Solfege singing (do re mi) is used to train the children's ears, as they are developing rapidly at this age and taking advantage of that with singing and ear training seems a no brainer! After we've got a good base with our ear training and note reading, we learn the corresponding ABC's that most people are familiar with. These fun group classes have the children playing hands together and reading notes very quickly. Small class size ensures lots of individual attention!
I have 35 years of experience teaching piano, and was the national rep for Yamaha Canada, training other teachers around the world in group keyboard instruction for young children. I love teaching kids and developed this program to create well rounded little musicians who will hopefully go on to enjoy playing any instrument of their choice with better musicality, a stronger sense of rhythm, keen ears and a love of music! The keyboard is the ultimate choice for learning music as it is visually easy to understand and there's no way to play out of tune!
I will open new classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:05, starting the week of March 30, 2020. The term will have 10 lessons, and conclude the week of June 1, 2020 with the following week as a make-up if needed.

- Classes are 45 minutes long
- I provide keyboards for class. However, a piano or keyboard is needed for at home practice. The Yamaha PSR E-363 or similar models are great, are available at Long and McQuade music stores, and sometimes come up on Craigslist. Whatever you choose, full size keys, at least 61 of them, and touch sensitive keys are much preferred!
- Currently, the program is suitable for 6-12 year olds. I will group ages accordingly depending on interest.
- I like parents to sit in on the first lesson if at all possible so that they know how to support their children at home. After that, you are welcome to attend the class or just drop them off and pick them up...whatever works with your schedule! I send videos of new songs to the parents so that they can help with at home practice, which is ABSOLUTELY necessary in order to progress. Small amounts of practice as often as possible during the week makes for a positive learning experience vs 'cramming' a long session in the day before a lesson!
- The Spring term is 10 classes long. Classes are $24 each and there is a $5 binder cost. So the total cost of the 10 week program is $245.
- Cash or direct deposit will ensure a spot for your child!
- Parent kudos from previous classes:

The Joyful Djembe!
I completed my 2-week long Artist-in-Residence workshop at Spring Creek entitled 'The Joyful Djembe' on the auspicious date of Friday, March 13th, 2015. It was a fabulous experience, and the entire school got to share what they'd been doing in a joint concert the last afternoon. Organized chaos and a lot of grooving kids made for a fun afternoon! They all really stepped up to learn some pretty complicated rhythms, and I was very proud of them. Their sister school in Kenya will be too, as the entire event was captured on video to send to Africa. Canadian kids playing African instruments and singing in Swahili...here in the small mountain town of Whistler. Not bad, eh?
Please check out a video clip of 'The Joyful Djembe' here. The version 'Lauri' is a wee bit shorter, the version 'Alison' includes a segment of a West Coast First Nations song thrown into the festivities as our Canadian Content!

The Drummer Girl Got a run!

The February 2014, 12-show run at the Firehall Arts Centre was a great success! We got some wonderful video out of the deal done by the Vancouver B Movie Factory that you can view by contacting me here.
Also some terrific new photos by photographer Anne Marie Slater that you can check out here.
And we raised $420 that I've donated half of to Plan Canada's 'Because I'm a Girl' program from the sale of CD's!
Thank you to everybody who came and saw the show...some for the third time! And thank you to Donna Spencer and the Firehall Arts Centre for presenting the run...I am forever grateful for the opportunity!
